Manual Therapy
Hands-on techniques used alongside exercise and advice to ease pain, stiffness and restricted movement.

Manual therapy describes the hands-on skills physiotherapists use to assess and treat the body — including soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, stretching and manual resistance techniques.
How it fits into your care
Manual therapy is rarely used on its own. Your HSR physiotherapist typically combines it with exercise, movement advice and self-management strategies, so that the benefit of hands-on treatment is reinforced between visits rather than relied on alone.
At home, this might mean working with you on a firm chair, a bed, or floor space in your living room — whatever setup allows a safe, effective session in your own environment.
What to expect
Your physiotherapist will explain what they’re doing and why, check in on your comfort throughout, and adjust technique and pressure to suit you. Manual therapy is often used for neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain and tennis elbow, among other presentations.
