Condition
Sciatica
Assessment and treatment for leg pain, tingling or numbness linked to irritation of the sciatic nerve.

Sciatica describes pain, tingling, numbness or weakness that travels down the leg, often linked to irritation of the sciatic nerve as it leaves the lower spine. It’s frequently connected to lower back problems.
How home physiotherapy can help
Your HSR physiotherapist will carry out a thorough assessment of your back, hip and leg movement, along with your symptoms and how they behave throughout the day, to understand what’s contributing to your sciatica. Treatment is then built around your specific presentation and may include hands-on techniques, targeted exercise, and advice on positions and activities that help versus aggravate your symptoms.
A home visit allows your physiotherapist to see the chairs, bed and daily positions that may be influencing your symptoms, and to offer practical, realistic adjustments alongside treatment.
What a session may include
- Assessment of your back, hip and leg movement and neurological signs
- Hands-on treatment where appropriate
- A tailored exercise programme to ease symptoms and build resilience
- Guidance on positions, activity and pacing
If you experience sudden, severe leg weakness, numbness in the saddle area, or loss of bladder or bowel control, seek urgent medical attention immediately rather than waiting for a physiotherapy appointment. Sciatica is often closely linked to back pain.
