Condition
Whiplash
Assessment and treatment for neck pain and stiffness following a sudden jolt, such as a road traffic collision.

Whiplash typically follows a sudden jolt or impact — most commonly a road traffic collision — causing the neck to move rapidly beyond its normal range. It can result in pain, stiffness, headaches and reduced neck movement, sometimes appearing a day or more after the incident.
How home physiotherapy can help
Your HSR physiotherapist will carry out a full assessment of your neck movement, muscle function and symptoms, and discuss how the incident happened and how you’ve been affected since. Treatment is tailored to your findings and usually combines gentle hands-on techniques, guided movement, and advice on staying appropriately active during recovery.
A home visit can be especially helpful in the early stages after whiplash, when travel and sitting for long periods may be uncomfortable.
What a session may include
- Assessment of neck movement, muscle function and associated symptoms
- Gentle hands-on treatment where appropriate
- A graded movement and exercise programme
- Advice on posture, activity and gradual return to normal routines
Ongoing neck symptoms are covered in more general terms on our neck pain page.
